It's Download festival for me, not Glastonbury - The Guardian

It's Download festival for me, not Glastonbury - The Guardian

I know exactly how Mick Jagger feels. He is worried it will rain at the Glastonbury festival, where the Rolling Stones are headlining. I am worried that it will rain at the Download festival, where Iron Maiden are headlining. I am not the lead singer in Iron Maiden, but otherwise our plights are identical.

I'm taking my son and two of his friends to the festival, because they are all too young to be unaccompanied by an adult. Weirdly, I'm not too keen to camp alongside three over-excited teenage boys after listening to endle ss heavy metal all day, so I've booked two nights at the East Midlands Airport Days Inn. We can walk the three miles there and back each day, hopefully having managed a couple of hours of sleep. I fear that it will be even worse for me than it will be for Mick if the weekend turns out wet.

Ouya will require credit card to download any games - Afterdawn.com

The console will begin with 104 published games at launch, all of which are free.

8000 developers have already created developer accounts for the system, and new games are being developed "daily."

There is one annoying caveat for getting the games, however. Users must first enter credit/debit card details before they can download anything, even the free games.

Additionally, Ouya says there will be a mandatory software update right when you boot up the console for the first time, so make sure you are Internet-ready when you get the device.

Sugar Tongue Slim - GOLDRush III [DOWNLOAD] - Hip-Hop Wired

Sugar Tongue Slim - GOLDRush III [DOWNLOAD] - Hip-Hop Wired

NEWS

There's a reason why Black Thought of The Legendary Roots, one of the best lyricists of all time by the way, keeps Sugar Tongue Slim in his inner circle. As a Philly local and Atlanta native, STS has the best of both worlds as far as what he offers as an MC: consistent bars, dazzling wordplay, and a southern bravado.

Each of those qualities are in full effect on his latest project, GOLDRush III, the third installment of the series. STS and DJ Bear One stick to the formula here, by taking and flipping notable songs from the likes of The Heavy, Purity Ring, Kavinsky, Walk The Duck and Gary Clark Jr into completely new records. It may sound confusing, but it works. Trust us.

STS provides an intimate experience on the 14-track mixtape, as listeners can expect to hear one feature from crooner Tony Williams. Get acquainted with some quality tunes below.

Daily Download: ItsTheReal, 'Girls with the Dirty Souths' (feat. Bun B) - RollingStone.com

Daily Download: ItsTheReal, 'Girls with the Dirty Souths' (feat. Bun B) - RollingStone.com

<!-- -->
Eric Rosenthal, Jeff Rosenthal, ItsTheReal
<!--
-->

It all started with an "I'mma let you finish": Back in 2009, brothers Eric and Jeff Rosenthal were a tad torn up about the disappearance of Kanye West after his interruption of Taylor Swift at the 2009 VMAs. Best known for their web videos poking fun at the hip-hop they loved (and some they didn't) made under the moniker ItsTheReal, the brothers decided to try their hand at rapping and put together a tribute video in the vein of Puff Daddy's "I'll Be Missing You" to honor the then-maligned MC. The clip took off, setting the stage for "My Girl's a Republican," which led to grumblings from the Tea Party and high-fives around the Thanksgiving table, as Eric recalls. The end result: On April 1st, the Rosenthals will release their first hip-hop comedy mixtape, Urbane Outfitters â€" and now you can grab a free download to its Bun B-featuring cut, "Girls with the Dirty Souths."

"It seemed like the most logical thing, to break down that fourth wall and become rappers after roasting them in our videos," says Jeff of Urbane Outfitters' origins. "We wanted to show different facets of ourselves, so all these things together put us in a place where hopefully television can't say no to us."

Much of the tape was produced by Greg Mayo, who constructed a trunk-rattling beat with rumbling bass synths and holier-than-thou organs for "Girls with the Dirty Souths" that cries out for, and receives, Bun B's husky, molasses drawl. A longtime fan of ItsTheReal and friend of the Rosenthals, Bun was the first MC the Rosenthals hit up when putting together Urbane's guest list, which also landed cameos by Freeway, Maino and Lil Jon.

"It was very important to have someone who got it and who understood it be the first one that we approached," says Eric. "And after that it was easy to be like, 'Well Bun B's a part of this.' And people followed."

The 50 Funniest People Now

While Urbane Outfitters marks the Rosenthals' first full foray into rapping, the duo approached it as they would one of their short-form sketches, which have led to gigs for MTV and Bonnaroo. "We would go to the studio and we knew we had a topic in mind, we had an idea in mind, and we were just sort of driven and focused and the words came out in rhymes," says Eric.

For "Girls with the Dirty Souths," the duo came up with a tongue-in-cheek ode to, er, hairy nether-regions, the brothers trading putrid punchlines like, "She stays away from trimming the pitch/She calls it Auto-Tuning," and "Get rid of that bush?/That's change I can't believe in."

It's goofy, it's fun and driven by the Rosenthals' desire to, as Eric puts it, find "the perfect balance between reality and ridiculousness." He adds: "We wanted it to be different than the Lonely Island and different than Weird Al. We wanted to create our own lane with it where we could walk this fine line where it sounds so real but what we say is so crazy."

As for the driving force behind Urbane Outfitters? "I think we're just trying to get signed to Bad Boy Records," deadpans Jeff, before the two let out a laugh. "I think that's the goal."

Google Is The Download King Of The App Store - AppAdvice

Google Is The Download King Of The App Store - AppAdvice

In stores around the world, Google would prefer that you purchase a mobile device with the Android OS installed. However, they are probably just as happy were you to purchase an iOS device, according to TNW.

The app analytics firm App Annie has found that in February, Google continued to be the top non-game publisher in the App Store. This is a trend that began in January, when Google’s YouTube and Google Maps became the top two downloaded apps in Apple’s store. Both of these were once native to iOS. However, since iOS 6, they have been supported entirely by Google.

Ironically, in the Google Play store, Facebook actually bests Google in terms of total number of downloads. Even though Google has 62 apps available in Google Play, it is Facebook that reigns supreme. The top three apps there are Facebook’s core app, Messenger, and Instagram.

Stories such as these are quite interesting, don’t you think?

Big Brother & Big Data: Good for Productivity? - Yahoo! Finance (blog)

Big Brother & Big Data: Good for Productivity? - Yahoo! Finance (blog)

Collecting behavioral data on employees can improve productivity and cohesion among workers, according to recent studies by Sociometric Solutions, a firm that uses its technology to analyze work environments.

Using its own sensing devices and algorithms, Sociometric tracks speech patterns, location, movement and posture in the workplace, and based on the data gathered, suggests ways to improve interactions between employees and employers and even office floor plans.

After tracking workers at a Bank of America call center, Sociometric suggested a change in break scheduling. And after the call center switch from staggered 15-minute breaks to having teams take breaks all at the same time, productivity increased by 23 percent and team cohesion increased 18 percent, according to Sociometric founder Ben Waber.

Across the board, based on work with companies including BofA (BAC), Steelcase (SCS) and Cubist Pharmaceuticals (CBST), Sociometric found that taking breaks together often led to gatherings "around the water cooler"--which led to more discussions about work. As a result, productivity levels rose.

"It's really important moving forward for this to be standard practice," Waber told Big Data Download. Even if it's not through his own company, tracking employee behavior could mean major cost savings, he said. If Bank of America implemented the concurrent break structure in all of its call centers, the company could save about $15 million a year, Waber said.

Of course, what some would call a "Big Brother" approach to productivity improvement could become a privacy concern for employees. But Sociometric says carrying a tracking badge is voluntary, conversations aren't recorded and companies don't receive data on individuals. They receive only data that apply to the team as a whole.

IPL 6: Official apps, ringtones up for download - Times of India

KOLKATA: With a host of mobile phone apps that make cricket matches available at one's fingertips and catchy ringtones, teenagers to twenty-somethings to middle-age cricket enthusiasts in Kolkata are gearing up for the sixth edition of Pepsi Indian Premier League (IPL) matches that kicks off here at the Eden Gardens April 3.

According to IPL's tweets, the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) official mobile apps for iPhone and Android users, developed by Pulse Innovations, are up for download.

The apps that allow cricket enthusiasts to enjoy live ball-by-ball updates, replays, statistics and much more, instantly and from anywhere, are a boon for students preparing for forthcoming entrance exams.

"We are preparing for our medical entrance exams in the following months and cannot watch the entire series on TV as we have to attend tuitions. So the cell p hone apps are a great help," Payel Ghosh, a standard 12 student and owner of a smartphone, told IANS.

Similarly, hostel students living in towns across West Bengal, who do not have access to TV sets and broadband connection always, are all set to go cyber.

"Sometimes we do not get proper internet connections to our hostel rooms. And TV sets fall short for all the hostel messes. Cell phone apps will be a relief for us," an engineering student of a leading technological institute in the state, told IANS.

Not only the youngsters, but older cricket fans are also gung-ho about downloading IPL-related software and ringtones.

"I have downloaded the IPL ringtone 'Dil Jumping' from a website. I have already installed the mobile phone apps since I will be travelling abroad and want to keep track of all the action," a city-based leather exporter told IANS.

With nine teams and over 70 matches, Pepsi IPL 2013 will be officially inaugurated April 2 at a glittering ceremony in the Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata, followed by the first match of the league between defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils April 3 at the historic Eden Gradens here.

The gala opening will see rapper Pitbull and Bollywood actors Shahrukh Khan and Katrina Kaif enthrall audiences.

Stocks That Tend to Rise With Gas Prices - Yahoo! Finance (blog)

Stocks That Tend to Rise With Gas Prices - Yahoo! Finance (blog)

How worried are U.S. consumers about higher gasoline prices? To get a feel for that sentiment, Yahoo! Finance looked at trends in online search terms and found that searches for “gas prices by zip code” were up 182 percent in the 30 days ending March 24, compared with the same period last year.

Drivers also increasingly seem to be looking for fuel-efficient alternatives to gas-powered vehicles. Searches for “hybrid cars” skyrocketed 2,448 percent, according to Yahoo! search trends.

Equity investors are trading on gas prices as well. Searches for “natural gas stocks” rose 764 percent, according to Yahoo! data.

Some individual stocks tend to rise along with gas prices, according to analyst Paul Hickey at Bespoke Investment Group. He cited Flower Foods (FLO), Allegiant Travel (ALGT), AZZ (AZZ) and True Religion (TRLG) has shares that have historically performed well when gas rose to $3.75 a gallon.

Regardless of how consumers may feel, however, the latest oil and gas inventory data suggest prices at the pump could dip further in the coming months.

While gasoline supplies fell, crude supplies and refinery capacity rose. Together, those increases eventually mean more gasoline.

A gallon of gas is currently $3.65, according to the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report. And seasonal price increases aren’t expected to be as dramatic as last year, said oil and gas analyst Tom Kloza at the Oil Price Information Service in a note covering his forecasts for the year.

But consumers are still looking for ways reduce the impact of high gas prices on their wallets.

Bronzeville emcee NoNameGypsy makes her anti-authoritarian raps sound as bright and vibrant as the weekend morning her track’s production so evocatively conjures. Download her "Sunday Morning" ahead of her show Thursday at Schubas.

Since coming in third place in the Louder Than A Bomb poetry competition in 2010, Gypsy has been rapping and performing. She's performed at the Vic, The Metro and Lincoln Hall. Gypsy is currently working on a mixtape, titled Telefone, due out in the summer. "I think the mixtape will be an introduction or conversation about who I am as a young artist. Half of the project is recorded but not mastered," Gypsy wrote to Chicagoist in an email. She said "Sunday Morning" will most likely appear on the project.

Regardless of whether "Sunday Morning" ultimately appears on Telefone, the track, a glowing blend of psychedelic neo-soul and street-smart rhymes, is a perfect introduction to Gypsy as an artist indeed. What makes "Sunday Morning" compelling is the juxtaposition between the easy-going production and Gypsy's strident, anti-government lyrics. Download it below:

And, as a bonus, check out a stream of her recently posted track "Rapper's Song."

Schubas is at 3159 N. Southport Ave. Tickets to Gypsy's Thursday show are on sale now. Here's the flyer for the show, presented by Louder Than A Bomb.

Google+: Download Instant Upload Pictures - Ghacks Technology News

Google+: Download Instant Upload Pictures - Ghacks Technology News

Depending on how you have configured your phone - and which smartphone you use - you may be using the instant uploads feature of Google+ that uploads photos that you take with your phone directly to the Instant Uploads section of the Google+ website. You can turn on or off Instant Uploads in the Google+ app settings on your phone.

The photos that you upload are only visible to you by default which Google makes very clear on the Photos page on the Google+ website. I see the photos as a backup copy which can be handy at times, especially if you are running out of space on your smartphone and need to delete some data on it.

Google+ up until now let you share photos that were uploaded this way, either directly or in form of albums that you are able to create on the site. What you could not do however was to download multiple photos at once that were uploaded with Instant Uploads.  The only workaround for that was to sort pictures into albums to download the full album as a zip file to the local system. This worked but was not really the way to go if you just wanted to download two or three photos to your local system. While  it is possible to select the photos one by one to download them, it was not the most practicable thing to do either.

Google today added a new feature to Google+ that enables you to select photos on the Instant Uploads page so that you can download them right away to your system.

google+ instant uploads photos

Just click on the check marks to select the photos and you will notice that a new action bar p opping up at the top that you can select the download option from.

The feature can be pretty useful in several situations. If you are working on a third party PC for instance and want to download photos to it. While you can do the same if you have your smartphone and connection cable with you, it is often the case that you do not.

The second option is to copy photos for backup purposes to your local system. Again only useful if you do not transfer your phone's data regularly to your PC anyway. (via)

3DS firmware update adds save transfers, streamlines 'download later ... - Joystiq

3DS firmware update adds save transfers, streamlines 'download later ... - Joystiq

The next time you open up the 3DS eShop, you'll be prompted to update your system hardware, to version 5.0.0-11U. While not a drastic change in the 3DS user experience, this firmware does offer a few tweaks that sound useful.

For example, you won't have to exit the eShop anymore for "Download Later" to work. Just close the 3DS and downloading begins. You can also download game updates in the background. The update also makes the save data transfer tool available, so you can move save data from a packaged version of a game to the eShop version (but not back!) The firmware also makes unnamed "further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments."

Apparently, however, Japanese users have been experiencing trouble with the firmware update. We're checking with Nintendo of America to see if the same error messages are in danger of occurring here.

Update: Nintendo of America acknowledged the issue. If an error message prevents you from updating, turn the 3DS off, then turn it back on, while holding the L, R, A, and Up buttons.

Bioshock Infinite on PC requires 14GB download - Geek

Bioshock Infinite on PC requires 14GB download - Geek

DVD Bioshock

Few things in the gaming world can be as frustrating as holding a physical copy of the game in your hand and still have an obstacle between you and playing it. For Bioshock Infinite PC DVD copies, you may find yourself waiting quite awhile after installation before it’s ready to play.

One of the crowning achievements of the creation process that has been revealed in the latest Bioshock game is the variety of machines it can be played on. The Xbox 360 and PS3 ports of the game each offer a trip to the sky city of Columbia in as high a quality as they can muster, but the PC version of the game consumes a whopping 17GB of space on your hard drive.

The reason for the bulk of that, as has been explained by Irrational Games, comes in the form of incredibly high resolution graphics you get if you play the game with Ultra settings. If you purchased a DVD copy of the game, you’ll find yourself with three discs in your pack for the installation. For some reason, once you authenticate the game with Steam, it starts downloading instead of pulling data from those DVDs.

DVDBioshock

Several Bioshock Infinite hopefuls found that their physical copy of the game was asking them to download 14GB of data after about 25 minutes of installation from the physical media. Since authenticating with Steam is a requirement with Bioshock Infinite, the service must be on during the who installation process. After the first DVD is finished, Steam hijacks the install and begins downloading the rest of the content instead of asking for the next disc in the series. The extra 14GB of content is being pulled from Steam on launch day, which must be very bandwidth intensive for Valve. As a result, your game is going to take quite a bit longer to finish installing than it would have had the included discs been used.

On any other day, this probably wouldn’t be an issue for most. Unfortunately, not only is it launch day but users with less than optimal internet connections will find this process excruciating. The install, which should have taken less than an hour, could be magnified to several hours as a result of Steam deciding that you’d rather download the game from them.

Many users already purchase from Steam by default, and on launch days rely on the pre-install method provided to them to make sure there’s no problems. The rest of us, regardless of why, aren’t going to have a great experience at the hands of Steam with Bioshock Infinite, unless of course this issue gets rectified.

Now read: Steam now letting you play games before they’re finished

Last October, we wrote about Ross Brown's various musical pursuits and his pretty-excellent solo album, Small Victories. Brown also fronts the local band Fullbloods, and last week they dropped onto the webs a four-song EP called Making Face. It mines some of the same screwball retro-surf sounds as Fullbloods' debut, The Perpetual Machine, but also mixes in some nice cokey '70s vibes - "Rich Man" totally has a "Josie" groove going on. Recommended!

It's free to download, and you can do so by going right here.

Apps to Download for Your New BlackBerry Z10 Phone - Wall Street Journal (blog)

Apps to Download for Your New BlackBerry Z10 Phone - Wall Street Journal (blog)

Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images

BlackBerry's newest smartphone, the Z10, went on sale on Friday.

Starting at $199 with a two-year contract in the U.S., the Z10 has some fierce competition with the iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S 3. It also has to compete with devices that are still in the pipeline for this year, like the next iPhone and the soon-to-be-released Samsung Galaxy S 4

Much of that will come down to which apps are available for the device. Last week, BlackBerry said it had more than 100,000 apps for the BlackBerry Z10 on the BlackBerry World storefront. By comparison, Apple’s store now has about 800,000 apps, and Google's has about 700,000.

Importantly, some apps very popular with consumers are missing from the Z10, like Instagram and SnapChat. Others, like Skype and Rdio, aren’t yet in the store but are expected.

Then again, BlackBerry does have most major apps, even if some of the best experiences aren’t ready for BlackBerry 10 just yet. Some of the most popular services, like Facebook and Twitter, are already built into the device.

There are a few extra things worth adding to make the experience complete, or to tide you over while developers begin rolling out their versions for BlackBerry 10. Here are a few apps to check out for your new Z10:

WhatsApp: WhatsApp is a popular cross-platform messaging app that is launching with BlackBerry 10. It’s already very popular on other platforms, like the iPhone and Android, and this version is free for the first year on BlackBerry 10. Free on App World.

LinkedIn: LinkedIn, along with Twitter and Facebook, is a professional social network that sports hundreds of millions of members. For a phone like the BlackBerry, which has traditionally been characterized as an enterprise-oriented phone, this is a good one to pick up. Free on App World.

Foursquare: In lieu of another good discovery app, Foursquare will help you find new places to visit, such as restaurants, clubs or coffee shops. Free on App World.

Angry Birds Star Wars: Every phone needs games, and BlackBerry has the newest version of Angry Birds in the form of Angry Birds Star Wars. Side bonus: This version is free, and one of the series’ most popular. Free on App World.

Waze: Again, in lieu of a typical navigator app like the Galaxy S 4′s new navigator, Waze serves as a good alternative for commuting. It has real-time traffic updates for driving around and will help you spot blockages and places to stop. Free on App World.

Slacker Radio: Slacker is one of the go-to “radio” apps for BlackBerry 10 smartphones. You can listen to a specific curated radio station, and vote up and down songs you like or dislike in order to personalize the experience. Free on App World.

Songza: Another option for listening to music on your smartphone. Songza essentially picks a song that’s appropriate for the moment, such as when you are at a gym or commuting home from work. Free on App World.

Kindle for BlackBerry 10: Luckily if you’re a fan of the Kindle E-reader or have already made book purchases on Amazon, you’ll be able to read them via Amazon’s Kindle app on BlackBerry 10. Free on App World.

New Microsoft study says your software is counterfeit - CNET (blog)

New Microsoft study says your software is counterfeit - CNET (blog)

(Credit: International Data Corporation)
In a new IDC white paper commissioned by Microsoft, cleverly titled "The Dangerous World of Counterfeit and Pirated Software: How Pirated Software Can Compromise the Cybersecurity of Consumers, Enterprises, and Nations...and the Resultant Costs in Time and Money" (full PDF), there's a boatful of interesting statistics around "the prevalence of malicious code and unwanted software -- such as viruses, Trojan horses, keystroke-capturing software, authentication backdoors, and spyware -- in pirated software and on the Web sites and peer-to-peer (P2P) networks where such software is found."

"[U]sing information from a 10-country survey of 1,104 consumer respondents, 973 business user respondents, and 268 CIO/IT manager respondents," the IDC investigation alleges that piracy and counterfeit software runs rampant through the digital universe, and that many users might not even be aware that their software is fake.

Most of the business news will report the big numbers: the IDC report estimates that "the direct costs to enterprises from dealing with malware from counterfeit software will hit $114 billion this year" and that consumers will waste 1.5 billion hours of time dealing with malware. But below the headline numbers are a host of fascinating discoveries, among them:

  • Both end users and companies reported that a high percentage of pirated software came preinstalled on purchased computers.
  • Counterfeit copies that require return visits to Web sites for stolen activation keys drive the chance of getting hit with a Trojan/adware infection to 36 percent.
  • 78 percent of pirated software comes attached with spyware.
  • 45 percent of end-users of pirated software reported significant performance errors that made them uninstall.
  • A total cost of $22 billion related to pirated-software-based infections.

Read the full White Paper (PDF).

The Morning Download: Dell Customers in Greater Limbo - Wall Street Journal (blog)

[Michael Hickins]

Customers were willing to be patient as Michael Dell kicked off the process of taking Dell Inc. private in January. Mr. Dell was angling for the freedom to make changes to his company without having Wall Street peering over his shoulder. Customers hoped the transaction wouldn’t “derail” the company’s technology roadmap, as CIO Journal reported. Now, as other bidders, including activist shareholder Carl Icahn and Blackstone Group LP, enter the picture, the company’s founder could lose his job as CEO, the Wall Street Journal’s Shira Ovide writes. Customers are no more the wiser.

Computer viruses: Being download-aware - Berkshire Eagle

Computer viruses: Being download-aware - Berkshire Eagle

PITTSFIELD -- Taking care of a computer is like protecting your body from an illness. Proper care, knowledge and smart decisions can keep viruses out of it.

While cyberattacks, viruses, Internet scams and hackers are discussed frequently in the media, Berkshire computer experts find that viruses and spyware often end up on people's computers because their users download dangerous items.

"They're sometimes harder to wipe out than what they used to be," said Howard Siegel, the owner of Bug Busters Computer Services, a South Street business that sells and repairs computers.

He said anywhere from a half-dozen to a few dozen computers each week need to have viruses removed.

"Sometimes we find that they're so infected, it's hard to get the virus out cleanly and completely," Siegel said.

Since Nerdz for Hire opened on South Street in Pittsfield last year, employees have removed what are known as "security viruses," or fake virus-protection programs, from computers at least once a week. Five security viruses were removed in a single week at the beginning of March, store owner Zane Poulton said.

Many viruses end up on computers from downloading items off of either BitTorrent, a peer-to-peer file-sharing service, or the website Bearshare -- "Silly things," Poulton said.

"Pay attention to what you're downloading,

and keep your virusing up to date," he said. "Don't just click next, next, next, next, finish. Make sure all the checkboxes are good. If you don't know what it is, don't install it."

It isn't always just problematic downloading that places viruses in computers. A Burbank movie studio, Facebook, Apple and The New York Times are just some entities that have reported hackers entering their websites.

About 10 percent of the computers brought in for repairs at Nerdz for Hire don't even

have virus-protection software installed, Poulton said. But those computers never leave the store without the proper equipment.

Nerdz for Hire will install AVG, a free antivirus protection software, for its customers.

Though no virus software for a PC is 100 percent safe, Poulton said he prefers AVG over other programs.

"It's like installing big brother on the machine," Poulton said.

It's a different case at Mad Macs on North Street, Berkshire County's only retail outlet for Apple computers, which also provides service and support for them.

Co-owner Daryl Corbett, who runs Mad Macs' service department, doesn't install virus software onto the computers because he doesn't need to.

"As far as security goes, it's a very secure operating system," Corbett said. "It's more secure than Windows. I've never had anyone ask me to install antivirus software. Apple publishes updates for that stuff."

According to Corbett, the only virus that can affect a Mac is malicious software, or "malware." Opening a virus that could infiltrate a PC will not download onto a Mac, he said.

Downloading illegally pirated music, movies and TV shows are some of the most popular ways that viruses infect computers, Corbett said.

"Everything you do, you run it through a virus software," Corbett said.

The Download: DC Week comes to an end - Washington Post

The Download: DC Week comes to an end - Washington Post

D.C. Week was co-created by iStrategyLabs chief executive Peter Corbett and Tech Cocktail co-founders Jen Consalvo and Frank Gruber. Early discussions are under way for a different event that might attract a wider audience, but organizers said the specifics are far from concrete.

“We feel like today there doesn’t need to be a D.C. Week,” Corbett said. “We think the ecosystem has very much matured.”

The local scene certainly doesn’t lack for events. Monthly D.C. Tech Meetups, which Corbett also helps organize, draw hundreds of attendees from around the region. Start-up accelerators such as The Fort and, more recently, 1776 also serve as a gathering place for local entrepreneurs.

And more than just the community has grown up over the past three years. The organizers also have their own burgeoning businesses to tend to. Corbett’s iStrategyLabs has more than doubled in size to 25 people in the past year, he said. Tech Cocktail hosts start-up events across North America, and Gruber and Consalvo now spend much of their time in Las Vegas.

“It maybe would be fine and cool and fun to do it again, but we never created it just to have fun,” Corbett said. “We need to re-envision what we do going forward.”

Those plans may include a more internationally focused event that partners with local embassies to bring upstarts from around the world to Washington. Such an event would happen in the spring of 2014 at the earliest, Corbett said.

“D.C. Week was always build the plane while you fly it. Figure out what people want and let’s make it as we go,” Corbett said. “With this, I think we’re very focused on building the highest quality experience you can imagine. We’re thinking through every piece of the puzzle ... and having it funded before we create it.”

Young angels

Entrepreneurs on the hunt for seed-stage capital have a new group of investors to pitch to. NextGen Angels is a club of Washington businesspeople ages 40 and under who want to funnel money to fledgling ventures.

It’s the brainchild of Dan Mindus, the investment director at the Center for Innovative Technology . The group held its first meeting in September, and Mindus said last week it is preparing to make its first investment as a collective.

NextGen members technically invest their money as individuals, though a start-up that garners money from 10 or more members is deemed a NextGen portfolio company. That means all the members are obligated to open their business networks to executives and lend the company a hand, Mindus said.

“I started talking to a number of people around town who I believed might be interested in angel investing and were either doing it on their own or weren’t doing it at all, even if they had an interest,” Mindus said.

NextGen Angels counts 60 members to date, a number that continues to grow, and Mindus said applicants are admitted based on their ability to invest and what they bring to the group. About one in three applicants are accepted, Mindus said.

“There’s tremendous interest in entrepreneurship in our regio n,” Mindus said. “There are a very large number of people who have extra cash who want to be involved.”

The group includes successful serial entrepreneurs such as Hemang Gahdia, whose start-up Condaptive was acquired in 2011 by Baltimore-based Millennial Media; Haroon Mokhtarzada, who sold Silver Spring-based Webs.com in 2011; and Sean Glass, co-founder of Higher One, a financial services firm that went public in 2010.

But Washington’s pockets of wealth are deeper outside the technology sector, with industries such as law, consulting and real estate producing a bevy of potential investors. For example, the group also includes Pillsbury attorney Steven Kaplan, LivingSocial’s General Manager of Entertainment Alex Michael and Gannett Vice President of Corporate Development Tom Cox.

“We’re certainly not Silicon Valley. That said, there’s a lot of wealth in this region. Some of it has been created by traditional entrepreneurs who have sold their businesses, but there are plenty of people who have wealth for other reasons,” Mindus said.

28th March 2013 (Europe) - Nintendo Life

28th March 2013 (Europe) - Nintendo Life

A blocky adventure, heroic rhythm, retail goodies and more

As always, Europe, news of the download offerings coming to the region in this week's update are already here to start our week with a bang. While there are a few new additions, including a previously unannounced transfer tool, the main headline is the lengthy list of retail downloads becoming available. There are some surprising prices, too, showing that the 3DS eShop may be joining its Wii U brethren in offering some rather appealing deals; let's get on with the details.

Wii U Retail Download

LEGO City Undercover (Nintendo, €59.99 / £49.99) â€" After its arrival in North America last week, this exclusive Wii U LEGO title arrives in Europe, with its zany and unrelenting humour coming along for the ride. Incorporating a large open world and enough collectibles to keep the most compulsive of gamers happy, we think this is certainly worth picking up for Nintendo's latest system; check out our LEGO City Undercover review for full details.

3DS Download Software

HarmoKnight (Nintendo, €14.99 / £12.99) â€" After last week's rather entertaining demo of this rhythm action title, the real deal is set to arrive in the coming week. From the famous 'mon developer Game Freak, this has been high on some wishlists since it was teased in a Nintendo Direct broadcast last year. We'll have a review with you very soon to see whether it matches the hype.

Code of Princess (Agatsuma Games, €29.99 / £24.99) â€" Released at retail and on the eShop in North America, the developer self-publishes this as download-only in Europe, which at least means that we get the chance to enjoy the experience on offer. This is one to strongly consider for anyone that's a fan of 2D hack and slash games, while some RPG mechanics and online co-op / competitive play add some extra appeal. We were certainly fans in our Code of Princess review.

50 Classic Games 3D (cerasus.media, €4.99 / £4.49) â€" Having enjoyed life as a budget retail title in North America for nearly a year, cerasus.media takes on publishing duties to bring this game collection to Europe as a cut-price download only title. We can expect card games, chess and similar things besides, and we'll see just how "Classic" these versions are in our upcoming review.

Save Data Transfer Tool (Nintendo, free) â€" This app will apparently allow you to transfer save game data from a game card to its retail download equivalent; with some of the retail discounts and prices outlined below, it looks like this tool is part of a big campaign to get 3DS gamers downloading more games direct from the eShop.

3DS Virtual Console

Harvest Moon (Natsume, €4.99 / £4.49) â€" Announced during the 3DS Direct broadcast in February, this cult-classic farming RPG is the second of two Natsume Game Color titles confirmed for the platform. We rather liked Legend of the River King, and now we can indulge in this â€" arguably â€" better known franchise. We'll dig out some wellies and bring you a review soon.

3DS eShop Discount

escapeVektor (Nnooo, €5.00 / £4.49 until 11th April, was €10.00 / £8.99) â€" Released during the Holidays 2012, this handheld title from the Aussie developer follows on from the WiiWare first chapter and includes four chapters of content. Footage rarely does justice to how compulsive and intuitive this title is, and now you have a chance to pick it up with a meaty 50% discount for a limited period of time. We think you should strongly consider doing just that, and we explain why in our escapeVektor review.

3DS Demo

Fire Emblem: Awakening (Nintendo, free) â€" While this title has rather quickly become the most successful entry in the series in North America, selling a pleasing number of copies for the big N, we still have a few weeks left to wait here in Europe. While we continue to chew our knuckles Nintendo of Europe is giving us this demo to get a taste of what's to come; it's free and it's one of the best games of the year so far, so there's no reason not to download this.

3DS Retail Download

Nintendo of Europe is bulking out the retail download list this week, with some eyecatching prices to tempt you:

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (Nintendo, €44.99 / £39.99) â€" After over a decade of waiting after his solo debut on GameCube, Luigi returns to his spooky quest. The first salvo of this Year of Luigi, this one has been critically acclaimed to date, with our Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon review explaining why we think this is a must-buy.

Resident Evil Revelations (Capcom, €29.99 / £24.99) â€" While HD entries in the series have had a particular action focus, this handheld title not only looks fantastic, but it brings some genuine horror. A HD remake arrives on Wii U soon, but you can see why the 3DS version is worth considering in our Resident Evil Revelations review.

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D (Capcom, €8.99 / £9.99) â€" The first Resi Evil title on 3DS, this one expands on the home console bonus mode, and is all about action and high-score chasing. This week it becomes available for the same price as a download-only title. Worth considering if your expectations are in line, as our Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D review explains.

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell 3D (Ubisoft, €19.99 / £17.99) â€" A 3DS launch title that had a bit of marketing behind it, the flashy adverts couldn't cover up what is a sloppy and poorly thought-out port, as our Splinter Cell 3D review makes clear.

Heroes of Ruin (Square Enix, €24.99 / £19.99) â€" This action RPG gives you the chance to master multiple classes, explore varied areas and tackle some nasty monsters; it also allows you to do this online with up to three other players, incorporating rather decent voice chat into the bargain. Even with a few rough edges, we certainly feel it's worth a strong recommendation; you can check out our Heroes of Ruin review for more details.

Nintendo Video

The Beet Party: Unidentified Flying Waffle (Redrover, €0.99 / £0.89) â€" The Beet Party is a series of 3D short videos available for download on Nintendo eShop. The two-minute interstitials target four to six year olds and follow the adventures of the five coolest beets around as they explore, experiment, celebrate and communicate with beat-boxing sounds when something new arrives in their fridge.

So, plenty to choose from on Wii U and, in particular, 3DS this week. Lots of quantity, but will the quality be taking away your funds this week? Let us know in the poll and comments below.
