Adobe Dumping Packaged Software for an All Download Strategy

Adobe Creative Suite 6

The age of physical media has taken another blow as it has been confirmed that Adobe will be doing away with physical copies of Creative Suite and Reader.

Following announcement from some resellers, TechHive has confirmed that Adobe is targeting a May 1 cut off for the sales of boxed editions of its Creative Suite and Acrobat. The company issued the following statement.

As Adobe continues to focus on delivering world-class innovation through Creative Cloud and digital fulfillment, we will be phasing out shrink-wrapped, boxed versions of Creative Suite and Acrobat products. Electronic downloads for Creative Suite and Acrobat products will continue to be availableâ€"as they are todayâ€"from both Adobe.com, as well as reseller and retail partners. We are in the process of notifying our channel partners and customers, as plans solidify in each region.

While it cuts down on costs and waste, both of which are good things, considering the size of Creative Suite, this could put a real strain on someone’s bandwidth limit for the month.

This is definitely where all media is headed whether it be music, movies or software, I’m just surprised it has taken this long to happen. With Apple and other manufacturers also phasing out optical drives across their computers, software downloads are most definitely the wave of the future.
