A line in Joel Plaskett’s Lightning Bolt provides the title for his most recent album Scrappy Happiness, a project conceived in fits and starts as he wrote, recorded and released one song per week until the lineup was complete.

It could have been a ramshackle affair, but the Joel Plaskett Emergency has been on too many stages and down too many roads to let these songs go astray.

When Dave Marsh’s drums and Chris Pennell’s bass kick in nearly two minutes into Plaskett’s solo intro it’s a glorious moment (one that’s even better in concert) with their main man tossing off electric jolts from his guitar like Zeus throwing lightning from the heavens.
