The Festival of Books app is ready for download - Los Angeles Times

The Festival of Books app is ready for download - Los Angeles Times

For those who feel strange if they don't have a smartphone on hand, modern technology has made navigating the L.A. Times Festival of Books easy. The new L.A. Times Festival of Books app is now available to download for free at iTunes and at Google Play.

The app is searchable, so you can find out where and when your favorite authors are reading. If you're listening to a panel and want to know more about one of the authors, you can drill down to learn more about them.

There's a custom schedule function, which was super-helpful last year for planning out the panels I wanted to attend. Because I'm old-school, I also carried around a copy of the print schedule, but the app was really handy.

Handy, in part, because it has maps. Even someone who attended USC and expects to know her way around (like me) may be surprised to find that a brick building and a grassy lawn are where a parking lot used to be.

That was all available last year. Something new you can do in 2013 is upload a photo to our #whatareyoureading gallery. It's already online, in this Facebook gallery -- in fact, you can upload to it now, without using the app, if you like.

About 400 authors, chefs, celebrities, the USC marching band and more are scheduled to appear at the L.A. Times Festival of Books. Download the free app and start planning now -- and don't forget to order advance tickets if you can.

Google Extends Chrome Download Warnings To Include Files That Could Allow ... - TechCrunch

Chrome will soon warn users when they are about to download software that could try to change how the browser handles extensions. Specifically, this extension to the company’s Safe Browsing system looks for binaries that could allow potentially malicious extensions to be installed in the browser without the user’s knowledge. This new feature will roll out within the next few days.

Last December, Google already disabled silent extension installations by default. According to today’s announcement, enabling this protection mechanism “resulted in noticeable performance improvements in Chrome and improved user experience.”

The new feature builds on this and also tries to prevent malicious extensions from ever making it into your browser.

Google says it will identify binaries that “violate Chrome’s standard mechanisms for deploying extensions, flagging such binaries as malware.” Most of these malicious extensions try to get around the silent installation blockers, the company says. Once they get past this, an extension can’t be uninstalled or disabled by the user. Some binaries, Google says, also try to manipulate Chrome’s preferences to allow the browser to accept silent installs again and often come bundles with a malicious extension which they then immediately try to install, too, of course.

Google says its “recent measures” will detect and block these kinds of malicious extensions, but it doesn’t go into detail about how exactly it plans to do so.

Miss Kittin, 'Eleven: First Listen & Download - Billboard

Miss Kittin, 'Eleven: First Listen & Download - Billboard

“What is EDM, seriously?” asks Miss Kittin with not a hint of sarcasm in her French lilt. “I don’t really know. Is it that the big music that is played at Ultra in Miami, like Deadmau5, Skrillex?”

The very savvy Kittin, born Caroline Herve, knows better than most how much naming can affect the growth of a genre. To some, she’s a refugee from a scene that never truly happened: Electroclash, an early-2000s, hipster-ized version of electro, informed by the theater of New York City club kids.

But Kittin herself has always looked forward. Later this month, she’ll release the epic, double-disc “Calling From The Stars,” her sixth studio album. Its 23 tracks contain the backroom electro grinders and fashionably spooky, dark techno trips for which she’s known. But there are also floaty bits like “Eleven” (“On a scale of 10 / We are 11”), which CODE has for you as a free download below. Its reverberating pads have an ominous Michael Myers quality. But Kittin’s vocal is downright ethereal.

“We were doing electroclash before the word existed,” she says of her early days. “We just called it electro. Electro for me goes back to Grandmaster Flash. It’s this rhythm [taps out a syncopated beat]. Then ‘electro’ was used to describe dance music and I was confused. It took me awhile to realize it was being used for something else.”

Kitten’s 2001 collaborations with Felix Da Housecat for his album “Kittenz And Thee Glitz” â€" particularly the single “Silver Screen Shower Scene” â€" sparked global imaginations and put electroclash on the map. But quick commodification, including a million-dollar Ministry of Sound record deal for its poster-band Fischerspooner, killed the scene before it had a chance to stand on its own.

“I always compare what happened to electroclash to what happened to punk,” she says. “Punk was happening and it was called simply rock ‘n’ roll. Then Legs McNeil wrote this fanzine called ‘Punk,’ and Malcolm McLaren came and took the name and made the Sex Pistols, and punk died with that.  It’s the same with electroclash. I also think it didn’t happen because it was too early. If Fischerspooner would come now, they would explode. If you look at Madonna’s show, even Britney [Spears’] or Black Eyed Peas’, it could be Fischerspooner.”

While Kittin enjoys a solid career as a DJ and live artist in Europe, she’s still interested in the strangely evolving, perpetually difficult market of America. It’s a testament to her own artistic curiosity.

“I never thought that my music would touch so many people here,” she says. “I have a totally different audience than in Europe. For example, I can have metal people, rock people, punks, gays, little clubbers, hipsters, older people, and they all come together because electroclash merged a lot of genres. People who were listening to New Wave, Depeche Mode and stuff like that, they recognized themselves in it. People from the rock side liked the harder stuff; the clubbers found that vocals could have a space in this boring music. That’s what is so interesting.”

True to her word, “Stars” has a little something for all of those disparate folks. It’s out April 22 on French label wSphere.

Google Play Catching iOS App Store in Download Volume, but iOS Still ... - Mac Rumors

Google Play Catching iOS App Store in Download Volume, but iOS Still ... - Mac Rumors

This article just proves the shift to Android devices is starting to have a major impact on Apple.

Apples stock is down $20 or 4.5% today. That's in incredible plunge.

Tim Cook still has done nothing to change the investors/analysts view on Apple and it will continue to slide until it's addressed.

And why should he? Apple's product lineup is the strongest they've ever had. The one blip is the Mac Pro. But the small percentage of people that need that kind of grunt for professional reasons have plenty of alternatives (and the small volumes the Mac Pro sells in would have next to no bearing on the bottom line of Apple).

Do you really expect Tim Cook to force out a half finished iOS 7 tomorrow to stop the share price sliding? This is a multi-billion dollar industry. Strategic decisions are made and carried out over months and years. Not off the cuff to the appease Wall Street.

- I switch from Windows to Mac 6 years ago (to a 24" iMac that I still use).
- I switched from Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Palm phones to the iPhone 5 years ago. (I've owned every model since)
- I got my first tablet - an iPad 2 - 2 years ago (and upgraded to gen 3 last year, which I still use).

I couldn't be happier. Is it perfect? No. But neither is the competition. There are trade offs on all the platforms.

I own Apple shares - am I mad? No. Just patient. If I felt there was no future in Apple I'd sell up. But they've risen so much over the last few years since I bought them that they could halve in value tomorrow and I'd be close to where I bought at.

It always bemuses me that people are so angry at AAPLs price. Surely you spread your risk over a number investments. Relying on Apple is foolish.

iTunes maintains its music download dominance as Amazon plays catch-up - tuaw.com

iTunes maintains its music download dominance as Amazon plays catch-up - tuaw.com

Nearly 10 years after the iTunes Music Store first opened up for business, iTunes remains the market leader in digital music downloads.

According to a research report published by the NPD Group earlier this week, iTunes accounted for approximately 63 percent of all digital music downloads in 2012. Trailing behind is AmazonMP3 with a somewhat respectable 22 percent share. While Amazon has a ways to go before even getting close to Apple, the world's largest online retailer has been making significant gains in that regard. In 2011, Amazon's share of the digital music download market checked in at 15 percent, representing a solid 50 percent increase year over year.

"Since the launch of Apple's iTunes store, digital music downloads have become the dominant revenue source for the recorded music industry and iTunes continues to be the dominant retailer," said Russ Crupnick, senior vice president of industry analysis at NPD. "There's a belief that consumers don't need to buy music because of streaming options, when in fact streamers are much more likely than the average consumer to buy music downloads."

The report adds that 44 million Americans downloaded a digital song or album last year.

To help contextualize the raging success that is the iTunes Music Store, Apple in early February announced that consumers had downloaded over 25 billion songs. That averages out to about 15,000 songs downloaded per minute.

The iTunes Music Store currently offers over 26 million songs to choose from and is available in 119 countries.

iTunes turning 10 years old, still owns 63% of music download business - VentureBeat

iTunes turning 10 years old, still owns 63% of music download business - VentureBeat

Last year, 44 million Americans bought at least one song or album from iTunes. This month, the digital music store that changed the way we buy music will celebrate its 10th birthday.

I guess time flies when you’re having fun.

After all those years, Apple’s iconic music service is still the largest music online music retailer, and in fact it’s the largest music retailer of any kind. As of February, the service has sold over 25 billion songs out of Apple’s 28 million-strong global catalog, and well over 435 million people have active iTunes accounts.

According to the NPD, eight out of 10 people who buy digital music have bought music from iTunes, and on an overall unit basis, iTunes owns 63 percent of the music download business.

On the cusp of a possible Apple digital streaming service, that dominance could continue for quite some time.

“Since the launch of Apple’s iTunes store, digital music downloads have become the dominant revenue source for the recorded music industry and iTunes continues to be the dominant retailer,” the NPD Group‘s Russ Crupnick said. “There’s a belief that consumers don’t need to buy music because of streaming options, when in fact streamers are much more likely than the average consumer to buy music downloads.”

The NPD surveyed 5,400 Internet users to build its digital music report, and while 38 percent of the sampling said that it is still important to own music, 41 percent of those who listen to Pandora and other free music-streaming platforms said the same thing. In addition, many of those streamers said they’ve bought songs because they discovered them on a streaming service or on the radio.

That’s important for Apple, because an iTunes streaming music service has been rumored for years, and just last week it appears that Apple and the number one music label in the world, Universal Music Group, came to terms on a streaming music payments agreement.

Though the number of American music listeners who buy music online has remained relatively unchanged, the amount they are spending has gone up about 6 percent since last year. That number could rise in 2013 if Apple does launch a streaming music service and it is well-integrated into an iTunes purchase capability.

You Can Finally Download and Use Mailbox's App Without Waiting in Line - Mashable

You Can Finally Download and Use Mailbox's App Without Waiting in Line - Mashable

If you've been interested in trying out Mailbox's app, but didn't feel like waiting behind thousands of people in line, now's your chance.

Mailbox, the much-hyped email app for iPhone, announced Tuesday that it is finally doing away with its reservation system and letting users download and use the latest version of the app right away. The startup originally introduced the reservation system in early February to stagger the number of users who signed up for the app in order to make sure its servers could handle the load.

"After 10 weeks of around-the-clock hard work, our engineering team has scaled the Mailbox service to deliver over 100 million messages per day (and growing)," the company said in a blog post. "We believe we can now confidently handle new users as they sign up, so we’ve pulled down the reservation system."

SEE ALSO: Is Mailbox the Best Email App For iPhone Yet?

Six weeks after Mailbox launched on iPhone, the startup announced that it had processed more than 1 million users waiting in the reservation line. The excessively long queue to download the app only gave Mailbox more buzz, though it also likely deterred some from downloading the app and caused other to judge it by whether it's worth the wait.

Mailbox's big selling point is that it is designed for mobile-first and offers users new features to organize and schedule incoming emails while on the go. For example, you can choose to have an email re-sent to you later in the day or over the weekend, or swipe to move a message to folders like "To Buy" or "To Watch." In this way, Mailbox helps to keep your main inbox more organized and closer to zero.

Last month, Dropbox acquired the app and the team behind it â€" 13 employees in total â€" in a move that both companies said would help the app expand more quickly.

Have you tried using Mailbox yet? Share your thoughts about the app in the comments.

Facebook Home expands beyond the US, now up for download in Canada and ... - Engadget

Facebook promised that other countries would be getting Home for Android sometime after the US rollout, but it didn't have much more to offer in the way of specifics at its launch event earlier this month. It turns out the wait wasn't too long for some countries, though, as the Home app is now available for download in at least Canada and the UK. Of course, you'll still need one of the phones already approved for use to actually run it -- namely, the Samsung Galaxy Note II, Galaxy S III, HTC One X+, One X or One. As for the one phone that Home actually ships pre-installed on, the HTC First, it remains a US-exclusive on AT&T; EE and Orange have confirmed that they'll be carrying it across the pond, but there's still no word on Canadian availability.

Trust Sweden to find a way for file-sharers to download without worries - Quartz

Trust Sweden to find a way for file-sharers to download without worries - Quartz

The home of the Pirate Bay, a notorious file-sharing website, just gave its citizens another way to download movies with little expense and without (too much) fear of the law.

Ung Pirat, the youth wing of the Swedish Pirate Party, last weekend launched K-Kassan (the “k” stands for kopiering, or “copying”, and kassan means fund). Essentially, it’s prosecution insurance. Members pay an annual fee of 249 Swedish krona ($40) and in return the fund promises to cover any fines imposed on those found guilty of illegally downloading copyright material. Sweden does not send file-sharers to prison but fines can be hefty, usually starting at 10,000 krona. Ten people were fined in 2012 and four already this year.

K-Kassan claims not to promote illegal activity. Its website keeps the language deliberately vague (link in Swedish), arguing that rules around file-sharing tend to be labyrinthine. Plus, the fund does not cover people caught distributing files for commercial benefit, says Isak Gerson, who runs the fund on behalf of Sharing is Caring, a non-profit set up to administer K-Kassan.

“You can only get your fines refunded if you file-share without a profit incentive,” Gerson tells Quartz. “If you try to make money off it, you are not covered by our system.”

Since its launch last weekend, the fund has already attracted a substantial number of members, says Gerson, though he declined to give a precise figure.

Though the concept might seem alien to outsiders, K-Kassan’s model has its roots in similar funds that Swedes have set up to cover other penalties for things antithetical to their way of life. Take paying for public transport, for instance. Since 2001, Planka-Kassan has protected people caught on public transport without tickets (“planka” is Swedish for fare-dodging). Founded in Stockholm, it soon spread to other cities, including Gothenburg and Östergötland. The model is not always successful, however; a one-time -kassan set up for “insurance against speeding fines” appears now to be defunct (link in Swedish).

Gerson cites Planka-Kassan as an inspiration for Ung Pirat’s new file-sharing fund. And the fact that it is still running was enough to convince him that authorities would be similarly powerless against K-Kassan.

Jai Paul tells fans not to download illegal leak of 'debut album' - Metro

Jai Paul has urged fans not to an illegal leak of an LP claiming to be his debut album.

The musician has denied the download, available for £7, is his debut album and asked fans not to buy it.

He tweeted: ‘To confirm: demos uploaded on Bandcamp were not uploaded by me, this is not my debut album. Please don’t buy. Statement to follow later. Thanks, Jai.’

His management have since revealed that Jai’s laptop was stolen shortly before the tracks were uploaded.

The album, which was posted online on Saturday, was released without fanfare on Saturday on popular music site Bandcamp.

Its release raised eyebrows as it seemed to have nothing to do with Jai’s record label, XL.

None of the 16 tracks had titles although the album did include his singles BTSTU and Jasmine along with a cover of Jennifer Paige’s Crush.

Bandcamp have since taken the album down although critics have branded the new material as ‘awesome’.

Configure Firefox's Download Helper extension for speed - Ghacks Technology News

Configure Firefox's Download Helper extension for speed - Ghacks Technology News

Download Helper is a long standing extension for the Firefox web browser that you can use to download media files from Internet websites. The extension supports a wide variety of services including all major video hosting sites but also many lesser known ones.

Download Helper displays an indicator whenever it finds media on a page so that you can download it to your local system. That's great if you want to download a video for offline viewing, watching it on the big television that you have, transfer it to your smartphone, or just archive it so that you have access to it should it ever be pulled by the site, rights holders or the original author.

download helper firefox tips

There are a couple of things that you can do to speed up the Firefox extension to increase its efficiency. I'd like to share with you a couple of tips on how to get the most out of Download Helper:

More than two video downloads at a time

This is without doubt the biggest speed bump that you can get if you happen to download more than two videos at a time regularly. Download Helper limits downloads to two videos at a time which means that you will have to wait quite long if you add four, ten, or even twenty videos to the download queue as the next video download starts only when one of the two current downloads complete.

To change that do the following:

  • Right-click the Download Help er icon in the Firefox web browser and select preferences from the context menu that opens up.
  • Here you find many settings, including appearance and behavior related settings. If you see more than one instance of the icon in Firefox, you can remove excess instances here for example.
  • Switch to the Services tab and there to Download.
  • The download mode menu handles the video download limitations. You can change the max downloads value from 2 to another value that you are more comfortable with, or switch to normal which means that the program will use the same limitations as any other file download in the Firefox browser.

download helper speed up

So, after making the change you are able to download more videos at the same time so that the downloads of all videos complete faster in theory. This only works if you have enough bandwidth to do so obviously.

One-click downloads

A second feature that I'd like to share with you is the option to bypass the save to window completely. Normally, when you select a video to download, you are presented with the option to select the local directory you want the video to be saved in. If you always save them in one directory, there is not really a need to display that window. So, bypassing it is an option in this case to speed things up further.

  • Open the preferences of the Download Helper extension again.
  • Select Services > Quick Keys this time.
  • Here you find hotkeys that you can modify if you want.
  • Find the Quick Download hotkey here. This bypasses the save to screen completely when invoked.
  • Click on the "Hold key( s) and click to assign" to assign the left-click to it. You will receive a warning that the key is currently mapped to the regular download but go ahead and accept the change.
  • Switch to the Download hotkey now which should be unassigned currently. It may make sense to assign a hotkey to this feature as well if you sometimes want to select a different download directory for videos that you download to your local system. Hold down Alt and Shift before you click on the Hold key(s) button again to assign the Alt-Shift hotkey to it.

quick download

Misc tweaks

There are a couple of other changes that you can make in the program. Here is a short list:

  • Services > Download: Disable notify quick downloads to hide these notifications.
  • Services > Social Share: Disable the enable social share option if you never use it.
  • Capture > Network: Change the minimum media size that is detected here (default 100 Kilobyte).
  • General > Appearance: Disable the icon animation here.
  • General > Behavior: Disable download count cookie.
  • General > Behavior: Upon clicking on the icon: Perform a quick download.

Download BitTorrent Files from Your Browser with BitTorrent Surf Beta - Gizmodo - Gizmodo

Download BitTorrent Files from Your Browser with BitTorrent Surf BetaYo ho yo ho, a pirate's life for me. And for you! And for everyone! Because downloading BitTorrent files just got a lot easier. BitTorrent is finally pushing its torrenting browser plug-in, BitTorrent Surf, to beta for you to try. That means you don't have to deal with pesky desktop clients, your browser (Chrome or Firefox) effectively becomes the only BitTorrent client you need.

Back in January, BitTorrent had launched BitTorrent Surf in Alpha but they've added more discovery features, a recommendation engine, a status window to monitor downloads and Firefox support. BitTorrent describes its recom mendation engine:

We've added a recommendation engine to Surf. So, say you're an EDM fan and you're searching for content by DJ Shadow. Surf will serve up relevant content suggestions, like a BitTorrent Bundle from Pretty Lights. Recommendation and prioritization can help drive visibility for BitTorrent partner artists â€" solving for the exposure barrier that every creator is confronted with. That's pretty powerful stuff.

The overall vision of Surf and its recommendation engine would be to give more control to content creators. You can get the BitTorrent Surf Beta here. [BitTorrent Surf, BitTorr ent]

Adobe announces Lightroom 5 beta for free download - TechRadar UK

Adobe announces Lightroom 5 beta for free download - TechRadar UK

Adobe's latest version of the popular photo editing and management software, Lightroom 5, is now available as a free public beta. As the company is looking for feedback on the software, members of the public will be able to download and review the program ahead of its full launch.

A number of new features have been added, while others have been improved since Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4.

The new radial filter enables vignettes in various places on the image, rather than just in the corners. Improvements have been made to the healing brush, which now enables you to make a custom shape for the brush, rather than the standard circular shape.

There's also a new way to fix perspectives and converging verticals with one touch of a button, known as the Upright tool. Adobe says over 50 additional "JDIs" (Just Do It) fe atures should speed up workflow.

Dust trap

Adobe announces Lightroom 5 beta for free download

A Visualise Spots feature quickly highlights dust in an image sensor to enable quick removal. The sensitivity of this feature can be increased or decreased, depending on your preference.

Smart Preview is a particularly interesting feature in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5 that enables image editing even when the full file is not available - for instance if it's stored on an external hard drive. When the full file is later available, any edits are rendered.

The way photo books are created has seen some improvements, with the ability to modify and edit page numbers more easily, while page templates can now be created.

Adobe has thought about the way that photographers now work with video, as we ll as photography. A new video slideshow tool enables customers to combine still images with video clips in an HD slideshow.

Adobe Lightroom 5 is available now as a free download via this link until the beta period expires.

Ecoute For iOS Updated With Automatic Artwork Download, 'Play Next' Feature ... - AppAdvice

Ecoute For iOS Updated With Automatic Artwork Download, 'Play Next' Feature ... - AppAdvice

Ecoute, an iOS music player app that “puts Apple’s Music app to shame,” has just received its second major update.

Released in August last year and subsequently given an AppAdvice App of the Week honorable mention, Ecoute got its first major update last October. That update brought iPhone 5 support and iTunes Match enhancements, among other improvements.

Now, Ecoute’s second significant update brings automatic artwork download, a “Play Next” feature, and URL scheme support.

With the new version of Ecoute, you can now automatically download missing album artworks for your music collection thanks to the app’s improved Last.fm integration. Of course, you can still automatically scrobble your played tracks in Ecoute to your Last.fm account.

Ecoute

The app’s new version also introduces a “Play Next” feature, which puts any track, album, or artist into the queue right after the currently playing track. Just long-tap on an item you want to play next and tap “Play Next” in the context menu.

Finally, along with a couple of bug fixes, Ecoute’s latest update adds support for the app’s very own URL scheme, prefixed with “ecoute://”. This enables Ecoute to interact with other apps like Launch Center Pro. Click here to learn more about the new URL scheme.

Optimized for iPhone and iPod touch running iOS 5.0 or later, the new version of Ecoute is available now as a free update or as a new $2.99 download in the App Store.

Nintendo Download: 18th April 2013 (Europe) - Nintendo Life

An awakening, various adventures, a Kung Fu rabbit and more

As it's a Monday, Nintendo of Europe once again gives gamers in the region something pleasing to get the week started. This time around we have new and old games for Wii U, 3DS and DSi, with some rather decent discounts being added to the 3DS eShop for good measure. Let's get right to it.

Wii U eShop

Kung Fu Rabbit (Neko Entertainment, €4.99 / £4.49) â€" This, as we exclusively revealed in late March, is Neko Entertainment's second release on the Wii U eShop after Puddle. Ported from its smartphone original, this 2D platformer includes wall-jumping and disappearing blocks reminiscent of Super Meat Boy, while there are apparently 80 levels to battle through. We'll achieve a Zen-like focus to bring you a review soon.

Wii U Virtual Console

Kirby's Adventure (Nintendo, €0.30 / £0.30 until 17th May, normally €4.99 / £3.49) â€" The latest entry in the Famicon 30th Anniversary celebration on Wii U, Kirby's debut adventure will be available at this special price for one month. A platforming classic that's also had the 3D Classics treatment on 3DS, this in an enjoyable, creative game that's still a blast to play today. We'll give a fresh take on this when it lands on Wii U, but until then you can check out our Wii Virtual Console Kirby's Adventure review.

3DS eShop

Super Little Acorns 3D Turbo (Pixel Toys, €4.99 / £4.99) â€" Another 2D platformer that began life on smartphones, this 3DS version includes 60 story levels and 30 challenge stages, representing a 50% increase in content over the original. You run, jump, swing and bash your way to collecting as many acorns as possible, so we'll head out into nature and get working on a review.

3DS Virtual Console

Dig Dug (Namco Bandai, €3.99 / £3.59) â€" A notable example of the early NES era that was packed full of action-based arcade puzzle games, this title gives you the task of digging around an area and finding ways to take out threatening enemies. It's simple and ultimately all about score-chasing, which we feel is potentially worth a spin in our Dig Dug review.

3DS Retail Download

Fire Emblem: Awakening (Nintendo, €44.99 / £39.99-- While the series is loved by some, this title stands out for its ability to stay true to its demanding strategy RPG principles while making small accommodations for those diving in for the first time. An epic, detailed quest expanded with multiple DLC offerings, this has been critically acclaimed and is the highest-selling entry for the series in North America to date. It finally arrives in Europe on Friday 19th April, and you can see why we think you should buy it in our Fire Emblem: Awakening review.

3DS eShop Temporary Discounts

This week sees the three Guild01 titles reduced (hopefully preceding confirmation of the Guild02 equivalents), alongside another title that is well worth consideration with its narrative, story-driven approach.

Liberation Maiden (Level-5, €4.99 / £4.49 until 30th May, normally €7.99 / £7.19)

Crimson Shroud (Level-5, €4.99 / £4.49 until 30th May, normally €7.99 / £7.19)

Aero Porter (Level-5, €2.99 / £2.69 until 30th May, normally €4.99 / £4.49)

Virtue's Last Reward (Rising Star Games, €24.99 / £19.99, until 2nd May, normally €40.00 / £30.00)

DSiWare

Forgotten Legions (Cypronia, 500 Nintendo Points) â€" This is a side-scrolling real-time strategy title that, in our view, plays a little more like a tower defence game. While the idea may have promise, the slow tempo, lack of skill required and messy visuals let this one down. Check out our Forgotten Legions review for full details.

So, plenty to choose from this week; are any of these options tempting to you? Let us know your download plans in the poll and comments below.

How to Download and Open Zip Files on the iPhone - GottaBeMobile - Gotta Be Mobile

How to Download and Open Zip Files on the iPhone - GottaBeMobile - Gotta Be Mobile

With mobile technology, the ability to access files from anywhere is the new norm. This being said, there are times when certain file types do not work correctly on mobile devices.

For iPhone owners this has been the case with any file in a zipped format. While zipping a file is a universal operation for computers, the iPhone does not understand how to read these files.

Luckily by using a free or paid app this problem is completely alleviated. The app that we used to open zip files on the iPhone is Zip Viewer.

Zip Viewer is a free app that can read any zipped file that you download from the internet, or in online storage systems such as Dropbox. Download Zip Viewer, and follow the steps below to view zipped files on the iPhone.

Zip Viewer for iPhone.

How to Download Zip Files

On the iPhone open Safari. Once Safari is open, browse to the link where the zip file is located. Once the file is found, tap the link to download the file.

Tap Zip

Tap Open in “Zip Viewer.”

Open In Zip Viewer

The zip file will then display in the file window of the Zip Viewer app. Tap the file downloaded from Safari.

Tap File

On the next page, select the file again to view the content of the file.

View FileOnce completed, the file is displayed in the next window.

Facebook Home now available to download (if your phone runs it) - NBCNews.com

Facebook Home now available to download (if your phone runs it) - NBCNews.com

Facebook

Facebook's new Android skin, Home, is now available for download from the Google Play Store, although you'll need to have a fairly state-of-the-art phone to run it.

Right now only a handful of phones are able to download Facebook Home, including the HTC One X, One X+, and Samsung Galaxy S 3. Some upcoming phones, like the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S 4, will also be compatible, as well, of course, as the HTC First, which comes with the Facebook-centric launch er pre-installed.

But let the user beware: The skin is great for heavy Facebook users, improving connectivity and adding an attractive chat interface, but removes several useful features of "stock" Android phones. The lockscreen widgets and security measures are gone, and desktop widgets and folders are also unavailable.

Reviewers on the Play Store have largely given Home 1-star reviews, saying that it works well for what it is, but obscures too many useful features of their phones for them to want it as the primary interface.

If you just want the "Chat Heads" messaging interface, that's available via the more widely compatible Facebook Messenger app. Users can download or update that for the new interface.

Luckily, it's easy to install and try out, and will almost certainly be improved and added to as time goes on. Owners of compatible hardware can download Facebook Home here.

DC Download: Outcry over Obama's budget - WWLP 22News

DC Download: Outcry over Obama's budget - WWLP 22News

(LIN) â€" This week, President Barack Obama released his 2014 budget, boasting $1.8 trillion of cuts to the national deficit over the next 10 years.

Getting our economy back on track is all fun and games, until your government benefits get cut or your taxes increase.

"If anyone thinks I'll finish the job of deficit reduction on the backs of middle-class families or through spending cuts alone that actually hurt our economy short-term, they should think again," Obama said Wednesday in an effort to reassure Americans.

Not everyone’s buying it though.

One of the biggest programs to take a hit in Obama’s budget is Medicare, and the proposal on the table slashes $400 billion over the next 10 years.

Next in line is Social Security, in which checks could fall by $45 the first year and by hundreds of dollars in years to come.

This leaves even Democrats feeling betrayed.

Rep. Ed Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat running for the Senate, released a statement to the Associated Press this week, saying he opposes the budget "because it would cut benefits to seniors on Social Security and makes other significant cuts to other key low-income programs that are vital to Massachusetts residents like low-income heating assistance."

Republicans aren’t jumping for joy, either.

One of Obama’s major proposals calls for increased taxes on wealthy, raising an additional $580 billion by limiting the amount of reductions the wealthiest can make.  Also on the table is enforcing the “Buffett Rule,” which forces households who make more than $1 million pay at least 30 percent of their income in taxes.

"We need a balanced budget that encourages growth a nd job creation. We don't need an extreme, unbalanced budget that won't balance in your lifetime or mine," said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., this week.

It’s impossible to make everyone happy, but it appears that this budget doesn't make many in Washington happy at all.

In a president’s second term, the battle for re-election is over, and the "heavy hitter" issues tend to come out. In the past four months, Obama has tried tackled a “fiscal cliff,” immigration, gun control and a sequester. In each case, he’s been caught up in compromise and technicalities in partisan politics that has gotten in the way of legislation. (Although, gun control legislation has progressed quite a bit this week.)

His budget proposals prove also prove this point: He’s had to compromise so much with both sides, that neith er side walks away winning.

How many of his proposals will be meld with the proposals Congress comes up with? Time will only tell.

It will be an interesting next few months, to say the least.

Facebook Home Now Available to Download in the Google Play Store

Facebook Home, Facebook’s attempt to make your Android homescreen all about Facebook, is now live in the Google Play Store.

As of right now, you can only download Facebook Home if you have one of these four Android devices: HTC One X, HTC One X+, the Samsung Galaxy S III or the Samsung Galaxy Note II. In the future, the HTC One and the Samsung Galaxy S4 will also allow for Facebook Home.

And then, of course, there’s the HTC First â€" the first phone to launch with Facebook Home ready to go. Don’t want to call it a “Facebook Phone” â€" then don’t. But it’s definitely the first Facebook centric phone on the market. It also hits the shelves today.

“Facebook Home is the mobile experience that puts your friends at the heart of your phone. From the moment you turn it on, you see a steady stream of friends’ posts and photos on your home screen. Upfront notifications and quick access to your essentials mean you’ll never miss a moment. And when you download Facebook Messenger, you can keep chatting with friends when you’re using other apps,” says Facebook.

And about those chat heads that let you “keep chatting with friends when you’re using other apps.” If you have an Android phone, want to download Facebook Home, but alas, your Android phone isn’t supported â€" all is not lost. Today, ahead of the Facebook Home launch, Facebook added chat heads as a part of the Facebook Messenger app for Android. Now you can make use of/be incredibly annoyed by chat heads no matter which Android device you own, depending on how you look at it.

The Morning Download: Banks Failing to Get Bang for IT Bucks - Wall Street Journal (blog)

The Morning Download: Banks Failing to Get Bang for IT Bucks - Wall Street Journal (blog)

[Michael Hickins]

Good morning. U.S. banks will spend more than $40 billion on IT this year, by some estimates. But according to Gartner analyst David Furlonger, too much of that IT spending goes toward maintaining outdated IT platforms. “This problem is magnified at the larger firms because they built those structures based on profit margins that were far better than what they are today,” Mr. Furlonger told CIO Journal. “Now they have to feed and water those platforms and processes.” That complexity was exacerbated through consolidation that occurred in the sector over the previous decade. According to the Journal, the six largest U.S. banks have more than 22,000 subsidiaries combined. Bank technology leaders are still working through those issues, but say they’ve been able to get their houses in order, enabling them to spend more on analytics and other strategic technologies, while keeping overall IT spending flat. Guy Chiarello, CIO of J.P. Morgan, tol d CIO Journal earlier this year that “net [technology] spend is flat from 2007… And that’s with more investment in innovation.”

Adobe software now free to download for students - Diamondback Online

Adobe software now free to download for students - Diamondback Online

Students will no longer have to trek to McKeldin Library late at night to finish a Photoshop assignment, after the university and Adobe struck a deal that brings the Creative Suite 6 and other programs free of charge to the university community.

In addition to Microsoft Office â€" which students could start downloading for free in September â€" students, faculty and staff can also download Adobe-licensed products, Matlab and other programs through TERPware, the university’s new software distribution site. The software is funded collaboratively by the Division of Information Technology, various university colleges and schools, and the campus student technology fee, Phyllis Dickerson Johnson, DIT communications and marketing director, wrote in an email.

TERPware experienced more than 6,300 downloads within the first week of its launch, Johnson wrote. And though TERPware itself costs about $40,000 per year, all downloads are completely free, she said.

“It’s a really good idea, considering that so many classes require you to type things up and make PowerPoints and things like that,” said Aleesha Onta, a sophomore economics major who downloaded the Office suite. “By providing [programs] for everyone, it gives everyone an equal opportunity to succeed in their classes.”

The accessibility of the Adobe Creative Suite software has already proven beneficial for journalism students and faculty, said journalism instructor Jon Sham, as several of the college’s classes involve photo and video editing. The launch of TERPware came as several journalism faculty members began transitioning from teaching Final Cut Express, a video and audio editing program, to Adobe Premiere, Sham said.

Though the switch might be frustrating for students who have already learned how to use Final Cut Express, it is important to keep up with the latest technology, Sham said. Since the layouts of the two systems are basically the same, students should have no trouble switching programs, he said.

For Jenn Rothschild, a junior in the graphic design program, the software release wasn’t so exciting. Rothschild already had to buy programs such as Photoshop because they were required for her classes. And though she received a student discount on her purchase, the products were still expensive, she said.

“I would have considered it a lot more if I was a freshman and hadn’t gotten the software yet,” Rothschild said. “People are saying how excited they were to get the software, but none of them were design students. All of the people I know who are in the design [program] already are frustrated, saying, ‘Where was this when I needed it?’”

Frustration continued for some other students, who have reported some download and installation issues. But the number of issues reported to DIT is a small fraction of the total number of downloads, Johnson wrote.

In the fall, the university hopes to release the Creative Cloud, which would make Adobe software accessible wirelessly through the campus network, Johnson added.

Because TERPware provides free access on personal laptops to programs that normally cost thousands of dollars, the university’s agreements with Microsoft and Adobe benefit everyone, Sham said. The Adobe CS6 Master Collection, one of the downloads available on the site, normally retails at about $2,599.

“I think it’s an amazing idea,” he said. “Everyone at the journalism school and everyone on campus will benefit from it.”

Download: Cassie - 'RockaByeBaby' [Mixtape] - Music and Lyrics (blog)

Singer, model, and Diddy's "protegée" Cassie dropped her debut mixtape entitled 'RockaByeBaby' online for all fans (if she still has any) to stream and download for free through DatPiff.com on Thursday, April 11. Find the corresponding links below.

The 13-track project features collaborations with Wiz Khalifa, Pusha T, Fabolous, Meek Mill, Too $hort, Jeremih, Ester Dean and French Montana, and music productions courtesy of Mike WiLL Made It, Da Internz, Rob Holladay,Young Chop and James Fauntleroy. 'RockaByeBaby' was, allegedly, recorded at the same time Cassie was in the studio working on that long-delayed sophomore album of hers. I say 'allegedly' because although Cassie herself has confirmed in interviews that that second album will happen, I just don't believe she'll put it out in the end. I mean, for real, who's gonna buy that?. Cassie's music career is pretty much done. It's true! Hey, we'll always have those great tunes of her; "Me & You", or "Long Way 2 Go" in our music libraries to remember her, but it's quite obvious, she doesn't have a place in the CURRENT scene of the music biz. Being this probably her last 'music set', let's 'try' to enjoy Cassie's 'RockaByeBaby'.

The Morning Download: Death Knell for the PC Era - Wall Street Journal (blog)

The Morning Download: Death Knell for the PC Era - Wall Street Journal (blog)

[Michael Hickins]

Good morning. That sound you heard Wednesday was the death rattle of the PC era. The inexorable decline of the desktop computer has accelerated sharply; depending on whether you believe IDC or Gartner, world-wide shipments fell by either 14% or 11% during the first three months of 2013. Just as with the fall of Rome, the reasons are manifold. Gartner tells the Journal that the decline has been fueled by greater consumer interest in touch devices. IDC, on the other hand, blames Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system â€" and its new user interface, seen as frustrating and confusing to many customers. Business customers are echoing the latter sentiment; Tracey Rothenberger, formerly the CIO at Ricoh Americas, and now its COO, says the benefits of switching to the new OS aren’t worth the effort of training employees to use it. “I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it. But I think there’s minimal value in the incremental changes that a re there,” he told CIO Journal.

How to switch back to Firefox's old download manager - PCWorld

How to switch back to Firefox's old download manager - PCWorld

Firefox 20 adds a handy new Download button.

If you're a Firefox user, you may have noticed a few changes in the latest version of Mozilla's browser, which "turned 20" last week.

Among them: a new Download Manager. It's a small tweak, and I'd say one for the better, but as I noted in Monday's post about Google Chrome's bookmark spacing, not everybody appreciates sudden and unrequested changes.

First, let's talk about what's new. At the right edge of the search bar, alongside the Home button (unless you've moved it), you'll see a new Downloads button.

In Firefox 20, Download Manager is now a part of Library.

When you're downloading a file, that button changes to a progress meter, showing you the time remaining. And if you click it, you'll see a drop-down menu with your three most recent downloads. That's pretty handy, in my opinion.

Previously, you had to press Ctrl-J to bring up Firefox's download manager, which is still the keyboard shortcutâ€"except that now download manager is part of the Library, home of your browser history, tags, and bookmarks.

No like? No problem. Here's how to bring back the old standalone download manager:

1. Open a new tab.

2. Type about:config, then press Enter.

3. Paste the following into the search field: browser.download.useToolkitUI

4. Under the Value field, right-click false and then click Toggle. That should set the Value to "true."

5. Restart Firefox.

Now, when you click that Download button or hit Ctrl-J, you'll get the old-school download manager. And if you decide you prefer the new one after all, just repeat the process.

Which one do you think you'll use?
