The Morning Download: DOE Spends $8 Million for Sensor Standard - Wall Street Journal (blog)

[Michael Hickins]

Good morning. The U.S. Department of Energy awarded a contract worth almost $8 million to a consortium of manufacturers promising to develop a single standard for industrial sensors. The hope is that a uniform platform can help manufacturers analyze data from any brand of sensor, allowing them to find greater energy efficiency across their production lines. The coalition, which includes Rockwell Automation and Honeywell, could also engage in a broader effort to unify and analyze machine data. John Bernaden, Rockwell’s representative in the coalition, tells CIO Journal the next phase of the project will look beyond energy efficiency, analyzing the efficiency of machine calibrations across a supply chain.
